Models Lift Sentences, Not Paragraphs
01The paragraph nobody can quote
A model reading your page is not reading it the way you wrote it. It is hunting for a line it can carry into an answer, alone, with your name on it. Everything that only makes sense next to the sentence before it gets left behind.
So I write to one rule, and every entry on this blog obeys it: every important claim must survive alone, out of context, with your name attached.
There is a test for it, and it takes ten seconds. Pull any sentence out of your page. Drop it into an imaginary AI answer about your category. Does it still mean something, and does it still say who did it? If the answer needs the paragraph around it, no machine will ever use it.
Most marketing prose fails instantly. Not because it is badly written, but because it was built to flow, and flow is the enemy of lifting. A paragraph is a mood. A sentence is a citation.
02Three rewrites from my own sites
These are not hypotheticals. Each one is a line I had live, and the version that replaced it.

Outline Technologies is an SEO and GEO agency that gets brands cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.
named the company · named the engines · zero adjectivesThe first line describes a category. The second describes a company. Only one of them can be repeated by a machine that is trying to be useful. The rewrite took four minutes and it is the highest paid four minutes of writing I have ever done.

a number beats a claim · the number is checkableThe second version is the one models quote, and I know because I watched it happen in the citation report. Numbers survive the trip into an answer. Adjectives evaporate.

FreeCV was cited 253,000 times by AI engines in six months, including 26,600 citations in a single week.
no pronouns · nothing depends on the previous sentenceWatch what the word it does in the first line. Lifted alone, that sentence is about nothing at all. A pronoun is a dependency, and dependencies do not survive being quoted. I once ran a tool whose homepage was titled AI Visibility Tool and never once said its own brand name in the body. Models had nothing to repeat, so they repeated nothing.
Write for the sentence that leaves the page without you.
03How I write every line now
One claim per sentence. Two ideas joined by a comma is one idea a model will drop. Split them and both survive.
Name yourself inside the claim. Pronouns break on the way out the door. Repeating your brand name feels repetitive to you and reads as identity to a machine.
Numbers instead of adjectives. Leading, powerful and innovative are unquotable. 253,000 citations in six months is quotable forever.
Answer in the first third. Measured data puts 44.2 percent of AI citations inside the first 30 percent of a page. Bury the claim below the fold and you are writing for nobody.
Read it as a stranger quoting you. Say the sentence out loud starting with the words "according to". If it sounds ridiculous, rewrite it.
None of this makes your writing robotic. It makes it specific, and specific is what humans wanted all along. The strange gift of the AI era is that writing to be quoted by machines forces you to write more honestly for people.
Tomorrow: the three acronyms everyone argues about, and where each one still pays.
