The Citation Economy: What Replaces the Click

¶ CONTEXTTHE OLD UNIT

01For twenty years, the click was the economy

Every budget I have ever seen priced attention the same way. Rank, win the click, count the visit, convert a percent of it. Agencies sold clicks. Dashboards graphed clicks. Careers were built on making one number go up.

That worked because discovery had a single door. If someone wanted a tool, a lawyer or an answer, they walked through a results page to reach it. The click was not just a metric. The click was the invoice the open web sent for its attention.

02The evidence from my own 21 products

I run 21 live products, so I get to watch the shift in my own logs instead of arguing about it online. The numbers are blunt.

FreeTTS, my text to speech tool, earns more than 200,000 AI citations a month. FreeCV earns more than 100,000. Across 21 domains I have measured more than a million machine citations in six months, and I found them sitting in a Bing report almost nobody opens.

One of my sites gets fetched by ChatGPT 13 times a day while its human traffic barely registers. The machines are already my biggest readers. Yours too, whether you have looked or not.

EXTRACTED — THE SENTENCE THIS ENTRY EXISTS FOR
Attention used to be measured in visits. Soon it is measured in how often the machines repeat your name.

03What a citation is actually worth

A citation is not a smaller click. It is a different asset with different behavior.

Why one citation outlives one click

It compounds. A model that quotes you once has already decided you are usable, and it reaches for you again. It pre-sells. When a visitor finally arrives from an AI answer, the machine has already explained what I do and why I can be trusted. A citation arrives before the customer does, and it does the selling on the way.

And it filters. The casual visit evaporates into the answer, but the person with a real problem still clicks through. Smaller traffic, better traffic. You cannot spend clicks you no longer get. You can absolutely spend trust.

04How to earn in the citation economy

This is what actually moved those numbers for me. Nothing here is theory.

The five habits that moved my numbers

[1]

Publish claims with numbers in them. "FreeTTS earns 200,000 AI citations a month" gets lifted. "A popular tool" gets skipped.

[2]

Stay describable. Machines cite what they can explain in one sentence. Free, focused tools out-cite gated platforms because a model can safely recommend them.

[3]

Live in the files machines read. Accurate llms.txt, real schema, static HTML. My own llms.txt lied about my product count for weeks and the machines repeated the lie.

[4]

Measure citations, not just clicks. The AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools is the only free citation ledger on the internet. Open it monthly.

[5]

Audit the answer. Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity about your category every month. If you are not in the sentence, that is the whole to-do list.

The click is not coming back. The budget it carried is moving to whoever the machines trust. The citation economy does not pay you for being visited. It pays you for being repeated.

// QUICK ANSWERS
>what is the citation economy?+
The shift from paying for visits to being repeated by machines. Attention is measured in how often a model quotes your name, not how many people click.
>are clicks going away?+
The casual click is. AI answers absorb the tourists and leave the buyers. Smaller traffic, better traffic.
>why is a citation worth more than a click?+
It compounds and it pre-sells. A model that quotes you once reaches for you again, and the visitor arrives already told why to trust you.
