What Is GEO? The Definition the Industry Still Argues About

¶ CONTEXTTHE ARGUMENT

01Ask ten people what GEO is, get ten answers

Generative Engine Optimization is the most argued-about term in my field, and most of the arguments are wrong. Some people say it is SEO with a new coat of paint. Some say it is writing an llms.txt file and calling it a day. Some treat it like a growth hack you run once. All three miss it.

Here is the definition I actually use, the one that has held up across 21 products and more than a year of watching machines quote them. GEO is reputation engineering for machines that read everything and quote almost nothing.

Every word in that sentence is load-bearing. Reputation, not position. Engineering, because it is deliberate work, not luck. Machines that read everything, because the crawlers ingest all of it. And quote almost nothing, because out of everything they read, they repeat a vanishingly small slice. GEO is the discipline of being in that slice.

¶ CLAIMWHAT IT
IS NOT

02Three things GEO is not

It is easier to define GEO by killing the myths first, because the myths are where people waste their year.

It is not an llms.txt file. This is the big one. Everybody points at llms.txt as if it were the whole game. I run one on every domain, and across my own sites its measured effect on citations was a number I could not tell apart from zero. The independent research I have run agrees: near-zero engine usage. Keep your llms.txt accurate because a lying one hurts you, but do not mistake a text file for the work.

It is not old SEO renamed. Ranking was a location you could rent with keywords and links. Citation is a reputation you earn. Keyword density does not move a model's trust, because the model is not counting your keywords. It is deciding whether to repeat you.

It is not something you can buy. There is no ad slot inside an AI answer. You cannot purchase your way into the sentence a model says about your category. That is exactly why GEO scares the people who only know how to spend.

EXTRACTED — THE SENTENCE THIS ENTRY EXISTS FOR
GEO is reputation engineering for machines that read everything and quote almost nothing.
¶ DEFINITIONTHE THREE
LEVERS

03What GEO actually is: three levers

Strip away the noise and the work reduces to three levers, in order of how much they move the number.

One, publish claims worth quoting. Models lift sentences, not paragraphs, so every important thing you believe needs to survive alone, out of context, with your name attached. If a machine cannot repeat your claim in one clean line, that claim did nothing for you.

Two, keep one consistent entity. Same name, same story, same numbers on your site, your schema, your profiles. A model cross-checks everything it reads about you, and a contradiction reads as an unreliable narrator. Models forgive a small brand. They do not forgive a contradictory one.

Three, be readable and be present where machines already trust. Clean HTML, real schema, open crawlers: that is just the door being unlocked. The actual lever is showing up on the sources the models already lean on, which is the part almost nobody wants to hear.

¶ DATAMEASURED,
NOT GUESSED

04The data the industry argues about

When you actually measure where AI citations come from, the picture is humbling. From the research I have run across my own products, here is roughly what ChatGPT's citations look like.

Listicles and roundups are about 44 percent of them. Being on the "best free X" list beats being the best free X. Wikipedia and Reddit together are more than a quarter of ChatGPT's citations. Review platforms behave like a 3x multiplier on whatever you have. And localized pages win 85 to 96 percent of non-English citations, which means a page written in the reader's language wins where a translated snippet never will.

Add it up and you reach the uncomfortable core of GEO. Most of your citations happen on pages you do not own. Your own domain vouching for itself is the weakest signal in the system. A footprint on the sources machines already trust is the strongest. GEO is not only about polishing your website. It is about earning your way into everyone else's.

¶ PLAYBOOKTHE DEFINITION
IN PRACTICE

05GEO, as a to-do list

If the definition is right, the work follows from it. This is what I actually do.

[1]

Write one quotable claim per sentence. Numbers and positions, not adjectives. Make every important line liftable with your name on it.

[2]

Fix your entity everywhere. One name, one story, one set of numbers across your site, schema, llms.txt and profiles.

[3]

Unlock the doors. Clean HTML, valid schema, crawlers allowed. Necessary, not sufficient.

[4]

Earn the third-party footprint. Get into the roundups, the community threads, the review platforms. That is where the citations actually live.

[5]

Localize. A page in the reader's language wins citations a translation never touches.

[6]

Measure citations, not rankings. Count how often you are quoted. That is the only score that matters here.

The industry will keep arguing about the definition for another year. While they argue, the citations quietly go to whoever did the work. GEO is not a checklist you finish. It is a reputation you keep earning.

Entry 005 of the ledger. Daily.

// QUICK ANSWERS
>what is GEO in plain words?+
Reputation engineering for machines that read everything and quote almost nothing. The work of becoming the answer an AI repeats.
>is GEO just SEO renamed?+
No. Ranking counts pages and links. GEO earns a model's trust, which you cannot manufacture with keywords.
>where do AI citations actually come from?+
Mostly pages you do not own. Listicles are about 44 percent of ChatGPT citations, Wikipedia and Reddit are more than a quarter, and review platforms multiply the rest.
