How to Get Cited by AI

// THE SHORT ANSWER

Getting cited by AI means being the source a model repeats when someone asks about your category. It is earned three ways: publish claims a machine can lift as single self contained sentences, keep one identical identity everywhere machines read you, and earn presence on the third party sources they already trust. Across 21 domains this approach produced more than a million machine citations in six months, with no ads and nothing bought.

The old goal was a position. You wrote for a ranking, you won a click, and the click was the prize. That prize is shrinking, because a growing share of questions are answered before anyone reaches a list of links. What replaces it is a mention inside the answer itself, with your name attached.

A citation behaves differently from a click, and that changes the work. A click is spent the moment it happens. A citation compounds, because a model that quoted you once has already decided you are safe to repeat. It also filters, since the person who arrives after reading your name in an answer has already been sold.

The mechanics are not mysterious. Models lift sentences rather than paragraphs, so every claim that matters has to survive alone, out of context, with your brand inside it. Numbers survive that trip and adjectives do not. That single rule changes how you write more than any keyword strategy ever did.

The second lever is consistency. A model cross checks what you say about yourself against what your site, your schema and the rest of the web say. Contradictions read as noise, and noisy sources get skipped. One name, one description, one set of numbers, everywhere.

The third lever is the uncomfortable one. When you measure where citations actually come from, most of them happen on pages you do not own: roundups and comparison lists, community threads, review platforms. Your own domain earns the trust. Other people's pages spend it.

The entries below are the working notes for all three levers, written while doing it on live products, with the real numbers attached.

// QUICK ANSWERS
>How do I get my brand cited by ChatGPT?+
Write claims that survive alone with your name inside them, keep the same name and description everywhere a machine reads you, and earn a presence on the third party sources models already trust. Then measure it: the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools is the only free view of who quotes you.
>Can I pay for AI citations?+
No. There is no ad slot inside an AI answer. Citation is a reputation you earn rather than a position you rent, which is why it takes longer to build and lasts far longer once built.
>How long does it take to get cited?+
Longer than ranking and shorter than you fear. A page has to be crawled, judged useful, and then repeated. On my own products the first citations appeared within weeks of publishing something genuinely quotable, and they compounded from there.
